How To Adjust To New Dentures

If you’re dealing with missing teeth, then dentures in Eau Claire are a great way to restore your smile! They are essentially a type of dental prosthetic designed to replace a few or even the full arch of your mouth.

Even though dentures are custom-made to fit you, you may still feel a bit uncomfortable in the beginning. Don’t worry - this is really common. Most patients need a bit more time to get used to their new smile, but once that happens, your dentures will feel like a perfect fit.

There are some things you can do to help the process, however. Check out these great tips on how to adjust to new dentures.

1. Wear Them Non-Stop for 24 Hours

Right after you get your first pair of dentures, you’ll want to keep them on for the first 24 hours. This will allow your gums to get used to the new prosthetic.

After the first 24 hours, you can remove them and give your gums a break, such as right before sleep. Remember, dentures are not designed to remain in place 24/7, so it’s perfectly fine to remove them for cleaning and even sleeping.

2. Eat Soft Foods

Getting new dentures can make eating a bit difficult until your mouth gets used to them. So it’s best to stick to soft foods that don’t require a lot of chewing right in the beginning. This way, you can slowly begin to become used to eating with your new dentures, and slowly add harder foods back into your diet.

3. Take Small Bites and Don’t Use Your Front Teeth to Chew

As you start adding harder foods into your diet, remember to pace yourself. It may still feel a bit strange to chew with your dentures at first, so remember to take smaller bites in the beginning.

Additionally, you should avoid using your front teeth to chew food or even take bites. This can cause the back of your dentures to come unstuck.

4. Take OTC Pain Medication If You Feel Sore

Many patients feel a little bit sore after getting new dentures. As you continue to wear them, this pain and discomfort will disappear entirely, but in the meantime, you can take some OTC medications to help manage your pain.

5. Remember All These Effects Will Wear Off Soon

It can feel frustrating to wait to get used to your new dentures, but you need to remember that in just a few weeks you will return to normal.
